Public Speaking Tips: How to Present with Confidence

Public speaking consistently ranks as one of people’s greatest fears. But the ability to present ideas clearly and confidently is one of the most valuable skills you can develop — at work, in your community, and in your personal life.

Start with Your Audience

Before you write a single word, ask: “Who is my audience and what do they need?” A presentation to executives should focus on outcomes and ROI. A workshop should focus on actionable skills. A conference talk should balance inspiration with practical takeaways. Everything else — your structure, your examples, your tone — flows from this understanding.

Structure Matters More Than You Think

A clear structure makes your message easy to follow and remember. The classic structure works:

1. Opening: Hook them in the first 30 seconds — a surprising statistic, a compelling story, or a provocative question
2. Body: 3 main points (never more). Each point should have a clear claim, evidence or example, and a transition
3. Closing: Summarize your key message and end with a call to action or memorable statement

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” Same applies to presentations.

Write for the Ear, Not the Eye

Presentation slides are not documents. Write the way you speak:

• Use short sentences
• Use contractions (“don’t” instead of “do not”)
• Read your script aloud and revise anything that sounds unnatural
• Aim for conversational clarity, not formal perfection

The best presentations feel like a conversation, not a recitation.

Manage Your Nerves

Even experienced speakers get nervous. The key isn’t to eliminate nerves — it’s to channel them:

• Before: Arrive early, walk the stage, test your technology. Do deep breathing (4 counts in, 6 counts out) to activate your parasympathetic nervous system
• During: Find friendly faces in the audience and speak to them. Use hand gestures — they burn off nervous energy and make you look more engaging
• Remember: The audience wants you to succeed. They’re not judging you; they’re hoping you’ll deliver value

Use Slides as Visual Support, Not a Script

Slides should complement your speech, not replicate it. Good slides use:

• Powerful images instead of bullet points
• One idea per slide
• Minimal text (no more than 10 words per slide when possible)

Never turn your back to the audience to read from your slides. Your slides are there for them, not for you.

Master Your Voice and Body

Your delivery is as important as your content:

• Pace: Speak slower than you think you need to. Nervous speakers rush. Pause after important points
• Volume: Project to the back of the room. If there’s a microphone, use it
• Movement: Stand still when making key points. Move deliberately during transitions. Avoid pacing
• Eye contact: Hold eye contact for 3-5 seconds per person. This feels longer to you than it does to them

Practice on Purpose

Practicing in your head isn’t enough. Stand up, use your slides, speak out loud, and time yourself. Record yourself on video — it’s uncomfortable but invaluable. You’ll notice filler words (“um,” “uh,” “like”), pacing issues, and awkward transitions that you can fix before the real thing.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Technology fails. Audiences ask tough questions. You’ll lose your place. Prepare for these moments:

• Have a backup of your slides (PDF on a USB drive, printed handout)
• Prepare 2-3 answers for likely tough questions
• If you lose your place, pause, take a sip of water, and find your next slide

The audience doesn’t know what you planned to say. If you handle a recovery smoothly, they won’t even notice.
